“Our hearts are wild creatures, that’s why our ribs are cages”
This is quite well- known quote that evokes a profound understanding of the duality of human nature. This quote seems striking at most presenting human hearts as untamed force filled with cravings and yearning, pounding with wild rhythms. It is always desires like a feral animal at large, pursuing everything that gets its attention or attraction. But the second part presents ribs as cages, because we let this wretched thing lock away in seclusion, into isolation. Being a wild heart entails living freely and fully, just like a wild creature it longs to think freely, to form bonds deeply, to express itself without boundaries, to dream without constraints. Yet even after knowing that we often suppress those urges. The rib work as shelter in this scenario, but is it really worth it? Is it worth it to silence one’s self to behave in a particular way, to feel in a particular way, to live in a particular way? We are taught from an early age to hide our vulnerabilities in fear of being judged, judged by fickle people who have silenced their hearts a long ago. Maybe, this is the key of understanding human heart, to connect to other people, turn us into understanding being, teaches us empathy.
We live in a world controlled by brains, maybe the wildness that the heart is offering isn’t such a bad deal as it seems. It is what makes us human beings, the constant tug of war between the hearts to be free of these constrains and also the fear that, will we be judged by what this freedom demands? Love is what makes us compassionate, to understand others, to feel their pain and pleasure. Our Brain doesn’t know how to love, but it certainly knows shrewdness and calculations. So, love becomes a chore of the heart because certainly “heart wants what it wants.” Maybe this is the reason behind our misery, suffering and unhappiness. We certainly have a lot of material things to live our lives, yet the only thing that is missing is contentment. It seems that we have bound ourselves into so many layers of constraints that we have forgotten to live. We are struggling to laugh freely, to show our real self to the world, to show our real emotions to people. We are always in a struggle to fit in the box that society has dictated, although sometimes we think that we are meant for the great things. We are meant to be different to be likeable by others. Interesting thing is that we are the one that has turned our ribs into cages for our heart. Yet after implementing these constrains, we are still searching for the meaning.
In the quite moments of life, we often hear the quite whispers, the far cry to be free, to feel the warmth from the cold world out there. Sometimes, our emotions becomes so overflowing that, it seems that this feral creature is clawing on the walls of ribs, to seek freedom of the sun and the sky. But we have turned our ribs into a graveyard of our aspirations and freedom. It always takes courage to free our hearts; we just need to take a leap of faith to leave the boundaries drawn by the society. We need this wild creature to stay happy, healthy and to fulfill the longing of the soul. Freedom is imperative for us to be happy. Our life must be guided by our will; it must not be guided by the imaginary principles of society. Our ribs exist to protect our happiness but these flaws of society have turned into a cage, a cage of life imprisonment of our happiness. May this step guide us towards light and make us lighthearted and content. May we be true to yourself and live happily and freely.
